Treatment for opioid use disorder works. Buprenorphine is a medication like any other, prescribed by a physician, and you do not have to hit bottom to qualify for it.

How treatment works

Treatment has three phases, and we'll explain each one before we start.

  • Induction — your first dose, timed to where you are in withdrawal
  • Stabilisation — finding the dose that holds you steady, usually over the first few weeks
  • Maintenance — ongoing treatment and follow-up for as long as it helps you

Your first visit

We'll take a full history, talk about what you've tried before, and explain exactly what to expect. You will not be lectured. Bring a list of any medications you take.

Your care is with Dr. Daud Panah. Explore depression care, anxiety treatment and substance use care and psychiatry.

Salamat Clinic requires at least 1 in-person psychiatry visit every 12 months at our Atlantic City clinic for patients receiving psychiatry by telehealth. You must be physically in New Jersey for video visits. Additional in-person visits may be needed based on your care.

Confidentiality

Substance use treatment records carry federal protections beyond standard medical privacy, under 42 CFR Part 2. In general, we do not disclose your treatment without your written consent, with limited exceptions permitted or required by law.

Cost and insurance

We accept Horizon NJ Health (NJ FamilyCare), Medicare, and most major commercial plans. Cost should not be the reason you don't start. Call (609) 454-2865 and we'll check your coverage before your first visit.

You may have been turned away before

Until 2023, prescribers needed a special federal waiver to treat opioid use disorder. That requirement was eliminated. If you were told years ago that a doctor couldn't help you, that is no longer the case.

Frequently asked

Suboxone questions.

Can I start Suboxone the same day?

It may be possible after evaluation. The physician will assess whether starting that day is appropriate and safe; same-day initiation is not guaranteed.

Do I need to be in withdrawal to start?

You need to be in mild to moderate withdrawal before your first dose, or buprenorphine can make symptoms worse. We'll tell you exactly how to time it.

Do you take Medicaid or NJ FamilyCare?

Yes. We accept Horizon NJ Health, along with Medicare and most major commercial plans.

Will my employer or family find out?

Substance use treatment records are protected under 42 CFR Part 2, which provides additional protections beyond standard medical privacy. In general, we do not disclose your treatment to your employer or family without your written consent, with limited exceptions permitted or required by law.

How long will I be on buprenorphine?

There is no fixed answer. Some people stay on it for years, and that is a legitimate outcome, not a failure. We'll revisit it together.

Do you also treat alcohol use disorder?

Yes. Dr. Daud Panah is board-certified in addiction medicine and treats alcohol use disorder as well.
