Most adults with ADHD weren't missed because their symptoms were mild. They were missed because they were quiet, or bright, or female, or because nobody was looking.

If you've spent years working twice as hard to produce what other people manage easily, that's worth evaluating properly.

What adult ADHD looks like

It rarely looks like the childhood stereotype. In adults it's more often:

  • Difficulty starting tasks, and difficulty stopping once you've started
  • Time blindness — chronically underestimating how long things take
  • Losing the thread mid-sentence, mid-task, mid-room
  • Emotional reactions that feel disproportionate and pass quickly
  • A work history that doesn't match your capability
  • Exhaustion from the effort of compensating

How the evaluation works

A proper evaluation is not a ten-minute questionnaire.

  • A full psychiatric evaluation with Dr. Daud Panah
  • Developmental, academic and work history
  • Validated rating scales
  • Screening for the conditions that mimic or accompany ADHD — anxiety, depression, sleep apnoea, thyroid disease, substance use, iron deficiency
  • A clear diagnosis, or an honest alternative explanation

Treatment

Treatment is individualised and usually combines more than one approach.

  • Non-stimulant medication options
  • Stimulant medication where appropriate and safe
  • Practical strategies for organisation, time and task management
  • Treating co-occurring anxiety, depression or sleep problems, which often drive more impairment than the ADHD itself

Our prescribing approach

We evaluate before we prescribe. If stimulant medication is appropriate, we'll discuss it after the assessment — not before. Controlled substances require an in-person visit and ongoing follow-up with us.

Frequently asked

Adult ADHD questions.

Do you evaluate adults who were never diagnosed as children?

Yes. Many of our patients are adults in their 30s, 40s and 50s who were never assessed. A missed childhood diagnosis is common, particularly in women.

How long does an ADHD evaluation take?

The initial evaluation is a full appointment, and we may ask you to complete rating scales beforehand. Some patients need a second visit to complete the assessment.

Do you prescribe stimulant medication?

When it's appropriate and safe, yes — after a complete evaluation, never before one. Controlled substances require an in-person visit and ongoing follow-up.

Can I be evaluated by telehealth?

Some of the evaluation can be done by video if you are physically in New Jersey, but we require at least one in-person visit every 12 months, and controlled substance prescribing requires an in-person visit.

Do you take my insurance?

We accept most major plans including Horizon, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, AmeriHealth, Humana, Clover, Medicare and Horizon NJ Health (NJ FamilyCare). Call (609) 454-2865 and we'll check.

What if it turns out not to be ADHD?

Then we tell you, and we look at what is actually going on. Sleep disorders, thyroid disease, anxiety, depression and iron deficiency all produce overlapping symptoms and all are treatable.
